I have the opportunity to work with patients with different mental health diagnosis such as major depression, schizophrenia, dementia, bipolar, who are experiencing behavioural problems, hallucinations, delusions, illusions etc. which made me realize how important it is to keep our minds healthy. I am currently taking a course in counselling and mental health which really helps me understand people better.

A lot of people have trouble overcoming their thoughts. When negative thoughts about themselves begin to play in their mind and when they are not able to overcome it, these thoughts grow and become serious mental health problems. And it is scary to know that, these problems are more prevalent today and can happen to any ordinary person.

I begin to see the importance of keeping not only our physical body pure but also our mind. In church the past few weeks, I've been reminded of the Power of Christ that we as Christians have in our lives and how we are able to use that power to be set free from negative things that are clouding our minds. It is my prayer everyday, that my thoughts will be filled with His thoughts and that I'll be able to keep a healthy mind.

Thank God For Friends!!!

Here are some pictures with friends that I met in Sydney during my recent holidays.......sweet reunion:)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; One of the areas is in disciple making and rising up to be a shepherd....something like what we call a mentor back home. Anyway, in the process of becoming a shepherd, I went for my 1st session on follow-up. Its interesting cause this time we've not much of a written test at the end but now we've got role plays! haha!

So guess what? I'm paired with Hui Min and one week I'm supposed to be her shepherd, the next week her sheep and this goes on for next 6 weeks! It's just the 1st week and I'm having fun playing the role of a good shepherd......and her as my 'mock' sheep. haha......sheep put to slaughter! Oh no....sorry did I mention good shepherd? oh yes......trying to be like the Good Shepherd.

And next week......haha....my turn.....to be the sheep....will be the 'lost sheep' and Hui Min will have to come and rescue me this time! So interesting and we've to keep a journal of this and it will be part of our assessment....haha! How fun can this get?

Hopefully by the end of this follow-up class I'll be a good sheep and lost shepherd.....oh...what am I talking about? lost.......oh no, I meant that I'll be both a good sheep, who is willing to listen and obey the Good Shepherd and a good shepherd, who is willing to lay down her life for others. AMEN!

Redeeming Love

It has been awhile since a last got myself hooked on a Novel. This time I got myself "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers which was about a prostitute who married a prophet based on the story of Hosea in the Bible. It reminded me about God's love and how many times we've turned away from Him because we don't think we deserve it. Yet, He has been always faithful, waiting for us patiently to run back to His ever welcoming arms.

This story has got some really exciting and dramatic moments when the girl Hosea decided to chase kept running away from him. Anyway, it has been a fulfilling holiday, being able to do some reading, out by the river, with some warmth from the sun and chill from the wind. Some melancholic moment needed away from the busyness when semester starts again this coming week......so yeah, its the end of winter holidays.

Hillsong Conference

Yes, I was at Hillsong Conference last week! On the day I arrived, which was Tuesday, I had the wonderful opportunity to see and hear Chris Tomlin live! He and his band was awesome.... he is one of those few songwriters that I really like because of his lyrics. He and the speaker presented 'Indescribable' which got me struck in awe at the wonder of our God who made the universe. It was a really powerful media and music presentation which moved me especially when shifting from the beauty of the universe and to the scene of Jesus at the cross, taken from 'Passion of Christ'. Indeed, I have an amazing God who loved me and gave Himself up for me! He then ended with his version of 'Amazing Grace' which I really liked.....and was waiting for that. It was part of the sound track from this new movie based on a true story called Amazing Grace. You can check out www.amazinggracemovie.com.

The other bands other than Hillsongs were Steven Curtis Chapman and Israel......who were all really good. I couldn't help noticing the sound system, the musical arrangement and how professional these people are when playing on stage.....they were all so tight as a band and Steven's 16 year old son was a solid drummer!

PARTY@GOLD COAST!

DAY 1 - 22 JUNE @ DREAMWORLD

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I am currently doing my clinical practice at a High School College for students with learning difficulties such autism, asperger's syndrome, down syndrome, speech and language impairment, ADHD, anxiety etc.

This is my first hands on experience in conducting group music therapy sessions with this population and also had to work with the speech pathology students with one of the groups. It has been a challenging and learning experience to be running group sessions with these students. Imagine a bunch of adolescents are already difficult enough what more adolescents with different social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs.

Basically, I have been running an all boys group of 13-14 years of age who are lonely in school, have difficulties socializing, often bullied, have attention deficits and anxiety problems. These hyperactive boys keep me and my co-partner on our toes all the time! They are called "Beat Makers". Our goals for them were to form a safe and comfortable group to work on their social skills, team work, turn taking, and encourage positive behavior within the group. I have seen and learned so much just by leading these boys in activities that promote interaction through instrument play, singing and music listening.

It was interesting to see how these boys, each with their own distinct personalities, trying to form an identity for themselves within the group, how they tried to outdo each other, how they conversed with the person in the group that they admire, how they asked each other questions that they have been dying to ask but didn't dare, how they can be so encouraging and sensitive sometimes to other boys and yet on other times being a pain in the neck. As a therapist and a facilitator, I have learned to actually observe each of their personalities and to bring out the best in them within the group, to pull whatever thoughts, issues or opinion that they have mentioned and to put it to the group for discussion. Just a couple of weeks ago, one of our sessions were video taped and boy, that was the worst session that we've had with the boys all distracted and running all over the place. Yet, that was when I learned so much more about what I could have done and the week after that was so much better.

The other group that I had to co-lead was the totally opposite. They were all girls group called "Girl Power". Girls being girls are often more mature and I do not have to spend my energy running around. These girls were referred because of social and emotional issues. Their sessions were centred around group discussion on issues faced such as family problems, learning to say "NO", forming an identity for themselves, having a support group, how to handle anxiety and depression.

We used lots of lyric analysis, group songwriting and instrument improvisation to draw out these issues that the face and bring them into the group for discussion. At the same time, the group were to learn to use their social skill strategies such as maintaining eye contact when talking, taking turns to share thoughts and opinion, learning to listen to each other and communicate verbally and non-verbally.

These were the 2 contrasting groups that I have to handle. But these students remind me about my high school days when these issues were really real and hard to handle even for myself, what more for these students who have other difficulties. Nevertheless, there is a need to motivate these groups to form positive team work and learn from each other.

"COMPLETE"

Jac, Kelvin, Chia Yen & I

Here are some pictures of both my leaders' wedding 2 weeks ago. Well here it is:

Here I am, Oh God
I bring this sacrifice
My open heart, I offer up my life
I look to You, Lord
Your love that never ends
Restores me again

So I lift my eyes to you Lord
In your strength will I break through Lord
Touch me now, let your love fall down on me
I know your love dispels all my fears
Through the storm I will hold on Lord
And by faith I will walk on Lord
Then I'll see beyond my calvary one day
And I will be complete in You

Into Your Arms of Love I Run

One morning during quiet time, I just picked up my guitar and thought I would start off with some songs of worship. But that day, I felt that I just wanted to sing something from my heart to the Lord. Then I remembered what God spoke to me during group shepherding, in Psalm 27. God spoke to me through David where he had such confidence in God in the midst off difficult circumstances. And I came to realize that such confidence in the Lord, can only come through the intimate relationship he had with Christ. Do I have that intimate relationship with Christ that I can truly say I trust in Him in all circumstances?

Then, I remembered during OC, Kelvin prophesied over me, saying that I tend to think and reason a lot to a certain extend I had doubts in my heart. And that was really true that I find it difficult to accept some things as it is, and often question if it is the work of the Lord. However, if I desire to grow in intimacy with Him, I’ll need to put away all fears and doubts. It is time that I should just allow the Holy Spirit to move in my life by faith.

Therefore, this song is a reflection and my prayer to be like David in Psalm 27, who wants nothing more but the intimacy with God forever.

Into Your Arms of Love I Run

Verse 1:
"Moulin Rouge" - Val's bridal shower

Just this year, I've attended 2 bridal showers in Aussie! They are really a BIG thing here......like the last hang out party as a single.....girls with girls and guys with guys. The Aussies here do crazy stuff in public to embarrass the person who's getting married. But us, being girls, we're often very tame.....and rather hang out at friends house to chit chat. Hehe!

I had a wonderful opportunity here to play for these 2 weddings. Had the privilege to arrange the wedding processional and play with the quartet for my ex-flatmate's wedding that was in March. And coming up is my CG leader's wedding.....on Sat!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It all happened like this….my present supervisor was supervising four other music therapy students including myself. And on that day, she said in front of everyone that she got something to say to me but she wanted everyone to listen. In my heart, I thought what big “BOO BOO” I’d made and needed to learn but this was what she said:

Cheryl, I got a message from another music therapist in the Royal Children’s Hospital where you did your practical last term. There was this boy that you were seeing by the name of K. He came back to the hospital lately and he excitedly asked for you. The music therapist then had to explain that you were just a student and was no longer there. But he told her that he wanted to convey a message to you,

“Tell her that I want to say thank you for having music therapy sessions with me in the hospital. I know I was a very difficult and stubborn kid to deal with. But I just want to say thank you”.

Note on K: K was a 13-year old boy who was undergoing surgery due to some complications in his intestines. He had to stay in the hospital for more than a month and that was when I had weekly sessions with him. He was referred to music therapy because the nurses found him having very flat facial expression, not motivated to cooperate with other staff, depressed and isolated. According to the other music therapist, no one among the staff could actually breakthrough and talk to him as he was very stubborn. But I am glad that even though I might have thought that my sessions with him were not very fruitful initially, but now I know, that they made a difference and really meant something to him. It has been 6 months since I left the hospital, but it was surely a memorable practical experience for me.

Easter Break!

Just few months ago, we were are so excited planning our Easter break and now it's all over! I had wonderful week with so much to do, so much to learn, so much to receive and so much to share. Was down in Philip Island for Oceana Convention, the biggest camp I've attended with over 900 people. I've learned and grown so much especially over these past few months.

A group of us travelled down to Melbourne and it was hillarious as we carried our stuff round in the city (preparing me for my backpacking trip in Europe haha!) and bumped into church friends at practically every corner of Melbourne last Friday! A lot of my friends wanted to go shopping and eating as there are so much more variety there than Brissie. However, since I wasn't too interested in that, I went to stay with my cousin up in the mountains of Marysville instead after the camp.

I practically ate and slept there, trying to catch up over the loss of sleep at camp haha! It was cold, like winter in Bris. Here's a little peek for you into Marysville......

Learning to worship from the inside out….

Just being part of the worship team jamming sessions has taught me lots over the past few weeks. Stuff that maybe I already know but not put into practice; to be able to answer these questions and really reflect on what it means to be learning to worship God from the inside out:

-When I play with my instrument, do I mean what I play?
-Have I actually reflected on the words of the songs and see how my playing can enhance the words and its meaning?
-Am I actually sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading in worship?
-Am I actually leading a life of worship during times when I’m not playing?
-Can I worship in my own quiet moments even without my instrument?
-How can I contribute to the worship team so that we can be more effective in drawing people to worship?
-How did the people in the Old Testament worship and how can we follow their example in today’s setting?

Being involved in a worship team once again has given me a new meaning. There is indeed so much we can learn from each other not only musically but in living a life of worship and prayer. I believe this is just the start of a breakthrough that has begun in my life and I’m trusting God to take me and use me further in this ministry.

See you there, Jonathan

From the outside of the house, I could see the two-year-old boy peek through the window, smiled and waved, as though he was very excited to see us. My mum and I brought a little gift along, and even though he may not know us that well, there was surely a delight in his face when we entered his house and handed him the little gift.

Quiet at first, with his big sparkling eyes and lovable little expression on his face, he clung on very closely to mummy. “Jonathan, would you like to open your present?” I asked. He shook his head and just left it on the table. As his mum was talking to us, I slowly tried to talk to Jon again, pointed to his little tortoise and asked about it. Then, he began to walk over to the little creature, watched me admire his little companion. “That tortoise sure looks big from outside the glass, doesn’t it?”

“Hey Jon, look at all these cars you have on the table....can I play with them?” This time, he seemed to be more at ease with me and wasn’t as clingy to mummy.

“Jonathan, would you like to open your present?” I asked again. This time he nodded his head and did just that. “Now, let’s take a look at what’s in that book?” I said. “You’ve got stickers in there! Hey, look, here’s a fruit basket! What fruits would you like to have in there? Let’s pick the fruit stickers and stick them in the basket!” He gazed at the book attentively, didn’t say much, but his facial expression, eye contact, body language responded in such a way that he was having a conversation with me. We carried on with the sticker book and he would once a while say the word of the object that I pointed to in the book.

After engaging in the sticker activity, I proceeded to making a boat out of the wrapping paper and handed it to him. He began to chuckle, giggle, somewhat shy and scared when I pretended to make sounds and pushed the boat on the floor towards him. We did that a couple of times and he seemed to love this imaginary river that we were creating.

Before we realized it, our supposedly half hour visit turned into an hour plus. “Jon, I think it’s about time we have to go, but can we pray for you before we go?” There was a sudden change in his facial expression and gestures as he turned away and cuddled mummy once again. I could still picture the disappointed look in his face as he didn’t want to say goodbye. “I’ll see you again next time, Jon.”

“I’ll see you again next time……” but as of yesterday, I know that our meeting next time will be at a better place. A place called Heaven, where there’ll be no more suffering, no more tears, no more sorrows, no more pain, no more worries. Instead, there’ll be so much joy, peace, happiness, fun, laughter, singing and worshipping God for eternity!!! See you there, Jonathan.

(In memory of my 2-year old friend, Jonathan, who has bravely battled cancer and gone to be with the Lord on 23 March, 2007)

Rainbow Beach

I'm falling in love with the outdoors! Most of my friends were still away, and Uni hasn’t started yet. Just spent lots of time reading….haha! Yes, reading which I rarely did when I was back home! My new hobby was also inspired by the fact that I’ve been living without a TV for a month now eversince my previous flatmate moved out. And…..we’ve turned the house into a little reading café……so will see how long I can sustain without a TV!

But now, things are picking up. I’ve got work, practical placement, Uni classes and new church commitment…..which I’m excited but at the same time learning to juggle my time. I have to thank God that He answered my prayer again in giving me a practical placement that I have been asking for in a high school college and it is run based on Christian principles. So, this semester, I will be dealing with adolescents who have learning difficulties, social and emotional problems. Time for me to reflect again about what I went through myself as an adolescent haha!……hmmm….if I can recall…..

Also, part of my life here in Brisbane has turned me into a seasoned bus traveler. I’ve learned almost all the bus routes here believe it or not! My highest record of busses that I took to travel in a day was 7 busses. From my house – Uni – Toowong – Head Office – city – Work place – city – church office.

So, there you go – my life in Brisbane! Just wanted to let you know that my family and I had a wonderful time with your husband and 2 kids last December in Marysville. We spent most of our time in the outdoors, just as you would – fishing, barbecuing, trekking up to the waterfalls, playing with rabbits.

Your husband and kids still talk about you and we had a good time catching up with one another, though for just a few days. Raph is still as lovable as ever, impressed us by preparing breakfast for us and entertained us with his dance. Rach writes very well and is now entering her first year in high school. I still have pictures of them when I was still carrying them in my arms!

I’ve always looked up to you as my most talented eldest cousin who conducted musicals after musicals, yet gave up your music career to go into missions - even to the point of laying down your life for Him.

By the way, I can still remember one of your last musicals using ‘black art’, just before you went to Mali entitled “Young Miracles.” The kids in that musical have all grown up but I’m sure they still have your name engraved in their hearts, when they walked down the aisle at the very same hall to pay you their last respects. Your grand piano is being made to good use at my church back home.

You have been such an inspiration to many all around the world – Malaysia, Japan, France, United States, Australia, Africa and many more.

Will keep Jeff, Rach and Raph in prayer and will try to meet them as often as I can when I’m here in Australia.

Your cousin,
Cheryl

Tangalooma, Moreton Island

This shall be my last vacation before uni starts this semester! We had steamboat with the foundation students with approx 40 mouths to feed on new year's eve and another 20 mouths to feed our own Judah family on new year's day. In Part 1, it talked about the Human Animal where he elaborated on God’s creation and His care for them. Among the questions raised were:

-Why are there so many kinds of animals? Couldn’t the world get along with, say, 300, 000 species of beetles instead of 500,000? What good are they?

-Why is the most beautiful animals on earth are hidden away from all humans except those wearing elaborate SCUBA equipment? Who are they beautiful for?

-Why is almost all religious art realistic, whereas much of God’s creation – zebra, swallowtail butterfly, crystalline structure – excels at abstract design?

-Why are dogs much easier to train than cats? Why are African elephants almost impossible to train? Which does God take most pride in, a dog or a cat?

-Are human beings animals? Are they anything but animals? Why aren’t human beings easier to train?

As I came to end of the Part 1 of the book, I looked out my window, and Lo and Behold I saw parrots feeding on the nectar of the flowers in the tree! How timely it was that as I was reading and pondering on His creation, He revealed to me His love for His creation in ways that I don’t see everyday……parrots, feeding off the tree out your window?

Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. I had a wonderful time just catching up with friends and family. Haven’t been away from home for such a long time before actually, but it was great to be back and to be reminded of my home country again….not forgetting the food haha!

Returning to Aussie meant that I had to adapt myself to the quietness again. But it’s different this time as I am more or less certain of what I’ll be doing and have friends to look for! Unlike my first arrival where I had no friends, no church, haven’t even seen my room or flatmates……everything was fresh to me then. Looking back, it was amazing how I got through that stage….but through it all I know that God was guiding me and I thoroughly enjoyed my 2006.

One of the things that I truly enjoyed in Aussie was being able to do things that I liked, at my own pace without having to rush through the traffic or being immune to noisy surroundings. I get to go to the library, borrow books, read them by the beach, at the park, and just enjoy the peace and nature. I have ample time to seek God, read His words and be refreshed each day.

As I was reading one day, this was something that struck me…..something that I’ve not really thought of….

Loneliness vs Solitude. Loneliness comes when we are forced to be alone; solitude is a voluntary withdrawal from other people. Loneliness sweeps over us and hangs on in spite of our best efforts to cast it off; solitude can be started and terminated at will. Loneliness is painful, draining and unpleasant; solitude can be refreshing, rejuvenating, and enjoyable.

I recalled last year, there was a time when I felt most alone….or rather I chose to be alone was when I decided to travel on my own up to Sunshine Coast to visit a friend. I was trying to be adventurous and actually wandered on my own for the 1st time for about the whole day as I had to wait for my friend to pick me up only after work. So, meanwhile I stopped at different places along the Coast and this BIG Pineapple plantation. Boy, that was the quietest 2 hours there I had all alone!!!! But it was then when I spent the whole 2 hours just reflecting and talking to God.

These are some moments of solitude that a found refreshing….. “There’s no greater joy Lord, than being with You.”

Who Am I?

Such a meaningful song by Casting Crowns. Have been getting different comments from people,
“Wah, cannot recognize you!”
“Changed your glasses?” (which I’ve been wearing for a year now),
“So, got Aussie bf ar?”
“Don wan to come back already issit?”
BUT, I like this comment the most, “Nolar….you didn’t put on weight la!”

Its been close to 3 weeks since I came back and as I was traveling to Ipoh, I felt that my jeans was a bit tight, haih! So, it means time to eat less and exercise!!!! So people, make sure you help me safe money so that I don’t have to buy new jeans ok?

Anyway, as I was looking around the people in church, the kids and youths have grown up! I've made lots of new friends here eversince I came and looks like a lot of us are getting very much aquainted and feel kind of sad when we have to leave.....even though its just back for summer holidays for most of us!

I remembered seeing one of my friends off at the airport last week and it was as though we will not see each other again! haha....but actually will be back next year. So, ya...its kind of mixed feelings for me, to go back, look forward to next year and getting myself adapted again!

Mission @ Wynnum

A couple of weeks ago, my shepherd asked if I was interested to go on a mission trip to Wynnum. I gave some thought about it and decided, hey, why not, since I was on holiday and did not plan on any activities that week, might as well spend some time doing something beneficial instead of letting time fly by. So I went to Wynnum with some people from my CG and we combined with others from another CG.

Going into a mission field in another country is a totally different ball game. We had to adapt to the new culture, be brave ad step out in faith as we approached people. Wynnum is a small suburb by the coast with mostly retirees living there. So, you can imagine its a quiet and slow area with not much entertainment.

On the 1st day we just went to scout around the town and supermarket to talk to people and find out more about the place using a set of survey questions. However, we discovered that we went at the wrong time....afternoon, and there weren't many people outside. So, we learned from our mistake and modified our schedule for the following days.

On the 2nd day, we went on a prayer walk around the area and discovered that there were 9 churches, 6 of which were cults. Therefore, we could see there is a bondage in that place. My partner and I talked to an old man and he was into witchcraft. Then, we did street preaching and evangelism in the park but not many people were there that afternoon and no one was bothered about us. It was the 1st time doing so for many of us and we were very very nervous. But of course Christ was our source of strength. We felt that the ground was very hard that day and went back with more prayer for the following day.

On the last day, we did street preaching and evangelism as well...and this time we could see the difference that people were more open. I was more relaxed personally as there were people that approached us and we received 40 cents! haha! We felt really encouraged by the change in response in people and my partner and I managed to share the gospel to a Japanese girl.

We achieved our goal of scouting the place and got more information from the locals. Wynnum needs lots of prayer to free from the bondage of occultic practices. Finally we went for a BIG dinner after fasting lunch for 3 days and surviving on $3 per person for the entire trip. Hee!

For the sake of THE CALL

In just one week I heard from 2 of my good friends that they are going into full time ministry! (To protect their privacy I'll just call them Peter and John). About 2 years ago, I remembered Peter telling me about his heart's desire and passion with young people. However, he was still praying about it and he shared with me about his struggles, feelings of inadequacy, yet had this burning desire to respond to 'The Call'. I truly understand sometimes, how we think we are not good enough to be serving the Lord because of our past human faults, failures and we will not always reach His standard. But hey, God is not looking at our past mistakes, not picking on our faults, or failures. He simply is looking for a willing heart to follow His ways, allowing us to grow into perfection, teaching us and moulding our lives so that we can be the best that He wants us to be.

It was difficult for Peter, to stand up at that time to tell people that he wants to serve God full time. It was not time for him then, as he had to deal with his personal struggles. At the same time, all he needed was for people to support him, believe in him, help and encourage him to develop to his full potential. In the past 2 years, that he had a mentor to teach, guide, encourage, believe and stand by him. It was then, that he grew in the ministry, continuing to do things he's passionate for Christ. And, I just got to know that, he will be submitting his letter to his current company, to go into full time ministry next year in his church. Also, being brought up in a non-Christian family, he was able to tell his plans to his parents. God, really has the perfect time for everything, if only we have a willing heart to learn, wait and respond to 'The Call'.

John on the other hand, was my fellow church member back home. We were serving in the same ministry, youth and young adults. I couldn't remember how long I've known him, but I remember him at first, as a quiet, "in-the-background" kind of person. But over the years, man, this brother has turned grown and turned radical for Christ! I really could see the change in him as he grew spiritually from year to year. And I just got to know that he too managed to tell his parents about his desire to go into full time ministry. That is a break through in itself, since he also came from a non-Christian family.

Looking back, I felt so priviledge to have crossed paths with Peter and John and just to watch them respond to 'The Call'. I've seen how God worked through their lives in the past and it just amazes me how much more God is going to do in their lives when they obey 'The Call'.

Friends, what can I say.....I'm really inspired by the both of you! Continue to be the shinning light wherever you are!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!

It's holiday time once again!!! As I am writing this, I am actually at UQ library at Royal Children's Hospital. Yes, I am very impressed by UQ library.....and if you are wondering....I am at my practical placement centre blogging. Sssshhh.....jus don't tell my supervisor. Haha! Oh, well, back to my topic.....approaching the end....This is my last week at prac and I am just rounding up everything for today, getting my report done, completing my assignments and preparing for exams. At the mean time.....I'm just savouring every opportunity here at prac as I know that I may not get a chance to work in a hospital setting back home.

The semester is coming to an end and so is 2006. Don't wanna get into any sentimental mood.....but that's the fact. I've been in Aussie for 8 months.....8 fruitful months......oh, did I say fruitful???? Yeah... I think coming to study over here has been a BIG step for me...Overall, I can say that I am enjoying my stay here......but I really miss the 3 Fs - Food, Family and Friends back home.

However, I thank God for His provision and giving me a whole new spiritual family and friends here.....you know who you are.....my Judah4 friends of course! Children, no matter how sick they are, bring so much joy. Precious moments I had with this particular 7 year old boy that I have been seeing need to be recorded as I only have a limited time to spend with him. My boy was in isolation in the bone marrow transplant unit when I saw him. I am referring him as "my boy" because he is one that I've been having music therapy sessions with, since the beginning of his treatment till today.

I have always seen my boy as a chatty, cute, adorable, loving & charming little boy, who likes motorcycles, animals....dogs in particular, adolescent songs and especially love songs.....yes, my 7-year-old loves Love Songs.....ahem....Over the past few weeks, we have gotten very much acquainted as I see him twice a week. However, each session, instead of the usual half hour can drag on for hours.....but due to his isolation, I have to get out within an hour:(

During the session, he would sing along, play instruments, joked, talked about his favourite animals, and his family members would often join in if they were around. I was often told by medical staff and his family members that he would look forward to his music therapy sessions each week....and it felt like years for him before I return the following week. His dad said that he would ask for me everyday!

We had a lot of fun and I allowed him to express himself through song parody, instrument playing, and offering him lots of choice and control....this was to break social isolation, encourage normality in hospital setting, for distraction and to build self-esteem. Afterall, that's what music therapy is about for kids like him. There were times when I continued my session as the medical staff attended to him, calmed him down when he was nauseous, and at other times included his family members for a time of bonding.

Just a few days ago, his dad got him a mini guitar as he had been pestering his dad for one eversince he started music therapy sessions. He was so eager to show it to me, strummed along as I played and I taught him a couple tricks. He has taken so much interest in that instrument that he would ask me to play along with him as he performed to staff that were present.....including the cleaner!

Saying goodbye at the end of each session was tough! I would often end with a slow love song for him as he would often request for one last song before I go. There were times when he would pretend to wipe tears off his eyes and said, "that made my eyes water", asked really serious questions concerning the music, or other issues that popped up to his mind....really mature for a 7-year-old.

Today, he was really serious and asked me, "do your kids ask you to play and sing to them?" and my response was, "yeah, other kids do ask me that". Then, he asked again with a really innocent look, "No, I mean your kids?" I couldn't help but laughed and said, "I don't have kids of my own! I'm not married!" His dad, with a cheeky grin said, "I know what you're thinking off..." and my boy said, "I really love you.....but I think I will have to find someone my age...." Then, he shook my hand and gave me a BIG HUG!!!!! At that moment, I was really lost for words.....and the volunteer and his dad who happened to be there could only respond with...."Awwwww....." My boy always make my day....and that's why I choose to see him in the morning!

One lazy afternoon.....

Yesterday, I was at Caloundra, Sunshine Coast. Thanks to my friend, uncle and aunty who brought us there....it was one lazy Saturday afternoon. What a great way to begin my holiday! We began our journey at about 10.30am from Brisbane and our first stop was at Shelly Beach. Yes, the name speaks for itself.....we had really nice view of the blue green sea, and admired the rocks that were eroded by the water.

Then, we moved on to King's beach. That's where we had our little picnic (aunty made some really nice "kuih" like those we have back home!) and dived into the sea! I was being swept away time and again by those HUGE curly waves! Was fun tho, as you don't get this kind of waves back home! After awhile, I got tired trying to keep myself from being swept away.....so, my friend and I decided just to spend the rest of the lazy afternoon to get a medium rare tan. haha!!! The weather was good as the sun was warm but the wind was cool....u get the picture???

After getting the colour shade that we wanted....we got changed and proceeded to our next destination. It was another part of Caloundra beach, the one I went to early this year and got delicious boison berry + rum and raisin ice-cream to complete our trip for the day. I enjoyed the view of the sunset drive back.....seeing the sky and trees changing colour......aaaah.....awesome! Got back home at about 6.30pm......feeling refreshed and rejuvenated!

Mahjong anyone???

Yesterday my flatemate had his friends over for a game of mahjong! Though I've not played it for a long long time, it felt great to feel those tiles again! We had not only one BUT two sets of mahjong, which was even more exciting. Kinda like the pro's table and the beginner's table haha! I was with the beginners which were mostly girls coz the guys dominated the other which had bigger tiles. It brought back memories of Chinese New Year back home.....but of course, they weren't as noisy. :) Andrew added to the atmosphere by singing the Chinese New Year song....haha.

Anyway, holidays are coming up, and here are some of my to-do list:
1. Exercise - walk to Uni from my house
2. Exercise - jog along Brisbane river
3. Exercise - go to fitness first coz I've got free passes!

Can't fake it if you ain't got it!

Hey! Decided to update a bit more about my groovy life here before it becomes just a photo blog...hehe! I've just finished my mid term exam and yes, holidays are on its way. BUT, this holiday ain't really goin to be a real holiday coz i still have my prac goin at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH).

I've been gaining lots of new experience dealing with children in oncology.....but will write more about that next time. Too much for me to pen down.

Something has popped up in my mind these few days and its about "personality". I've been reading some journal articles and came across one that has 2 music therapists doing the same program but have got great differences in the results. And in our class discussion we talked about other health allied professions and personalities....like how you are more comfortable seeing a particular doctor rather than the other. Its all about their personality. Makes sense?

So, in whatever you do, your personality counts! If you are fake, people can tell by the way you act. Sincerity comes from the heart. It was originally called the Brisbane Exhibition and therefore is now usually known as Ekka, due to the phenomenon in Australian English of shortening lengthy words.

There were lots of things to see and do like show bags (a bag of stuff for a cheaper price....i got the tim tam's bag...hehe!), farm animals, fun fair rides, showcase of agricultural products, stunt shows, motor race, cannonball lady, horse race, dog competition (which was really nice...seeing those pretty dogs!), synchronized whipcracking, circus and much much more....which we couldn't have covered on the same day.

It's a Craazzzzy Household!!!

Say Cheese!!! Oh well...these are my flatmates (+Val). Yeah....we've got something in common ;) In case you think I've gone mad here....well you're right! We've gone mad playing this 'word bomb' game after dinner one night. In hokkien.....people say 'chiak pa siau eng'. haha! Well, the game goes like this....there's like a battery operated bomb that you've to pass from one to another before it blasts. But, before u can pass them, you need to pick up a card and form words with the letters on it. But, if you can't spell fast enough, you can't pass the bomb....and after awhile, that's what happen to us when you're not good with spelling....:(

Ku Rindu Pada Mu

Ku rindu pada mu
Malaysia, oh tanah air ku,
Ku berdoa untuk mu,
Agar mu mengerti kebahagiaan.

Ku rindu pada mu,
Bagai lautan mendalam,
Ku masih teringat,
Detik di saat kebangaanmu.

Ku rindu pada mu,
Mengharungi cita-cita,
Berbilang kaum,
Hidup bermuafakat.

Ku rindu pada mu,
Takkan kehabisan,
Walau kini,
Ku tiada disisimu.

Malaysia, negeraku, selamat menyambut Hari Kemerdekaan!

Unit Getaway!!!!

Here we are....the professional posers of Judah IV!

We, the Judah IV were at Bribie Island last weekend for our unit getaway! It was a fun, peaceful, and relaxing time we had learning and getting to know one another better. We rented a BIG house with many, many rooms.....it was quite cool actually....reminded me of my grandma's house in Menglembu! We took turns cooking, and Yes, I'm now an experienced chef.....cooking for 25 people. Any takers???? I enjoyed myself being by the calm and serene beach without any commercial interruptions. We played some team bonding games, captain's ball and frisbee......the Ultimate Frisbee...which I'm beginning to enjoy! and of course not forgetting....the yummy ice-cream. So, here am I eating and exercising.....

Do, Re, Mi, Fa....

It's my turn to reminisce....

When I did my practical at the aged care last semester, we did lots of reminiscence with the old people to help them maintain their memory, and stimulate their cognitive skills. However, It's my turn to reminisce......although I'm not that old....but reminiscence is for everyone!

I've just got news that my best friend back home is going for post grad studies soon. Which means that I'll be missing her even more.....and even if I go back, I won't get to see her until ......i really don't know when I'll see her again. Yes, we've just celebrated 10 years of friendship!

I got to know her since secondary school. We've had really good times together and had each other to share our really bad times as well. I really missed the times when we used to go swimming almost every week (yes....we were very health conscious ppl then...hehe!) and then go to "mamak" or dinner together.....and talked and talked and talked.....until I had to leave for Aussie :(

Also, I've just got to know that my other childhood friend is here in Melbourne doing her post grad too. Looks like all my friends are like me....hehe....busy studying. Time really flies.... I could still remember the times when we were still schooling and had slumber party, roller blade, gossip and stuff .....haha! We were at Surfers Paradise last Saturday and went Whale Watching. Well....we did see some humpback whales, dolphins & seagulls....after quite a distance into the deep blue sea.

My friends actually teased me and asked me to sing some whale songs to attract the whales.....however, due to lack of knowledge on "whaling"......I didn't of course....hehe! If not I would have made a pod of friends!

Here are some interesting facts we were told on board about the Humpback Whale :

adult usually ranges between 12–16 m long and weighs approximately 36 tonnes.

well known for its breaching (leaping out of the water).

has long front fins.

are curious mammals

And.....for more interesting facts that weren't told on board:

The Whale song: repetitious sounds produced by whales at varying frequencies

collection of sounds made by whales to communicate.

Male Humpback Whales perform these vocalizations only during the mating season.

These sounds vary in frequency from 20 Hz to 10 kHz (the typical Human range of hearing is 20 Hz to 20 kHz).

The whale will repeat the same song, which last perhaps twenty minutes, over and over again over the course of hours or even days.

each whale's song will slowly evolve over time. For example, over the course of a month a particular unit that started as an "upsweep" (increasing in frequency) may slowly flatten to become a constant note. Another unit may get steadily louder. The pace of evolution of a whale's song also changes—some years the song may change quite rapidly, whereas in other years little variation may be recorded.

Whales occupying the same geographical areas tend to sing similar songs, with only slight variations.

the Humpbacks also make a of sound called the feeding call. The exact purpose of the call is not known, but research suggests that fish do know what it means. When the sound was played back to them, a group of herring responded to the sound by moving away from the call, even though no whale was present.

That's all for now...... got to go practice my "Whaling..........";)

Bitter Sweet Farewell....

My closest Malaysian friend in Brisbane is heading back today! I often wonder what it meant with all these funny funny names they come up with here. So, I looked up the web and found the meaning of TARINGA.

The name Taringa is made up of two Aboriginal words: tarau (stones) and nga (made up of). Together, they mean "place of stones".

Then, I thought "Wow"....how meaningful it will be for me to mark the events about what God has done in my life.....especially eversince I came here. I'm beginning to see the significant things He has done and marking them down as a memorial like what Joshua did in Joshua 4:4-7.

So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, "Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever."

So, may Taringa be a place filled with wonderful memories for me!

Mooloolaba Pictures!

Coast to Coast

Last weekend, I was at my friend's place at Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast. It was a real holiday home....beside a canal!!! I began my excursion from Brisbane-Sunshine Coast by train on my own. Was trying to find my way to the BIG PINEAPPLE when I met a bunch of friends who were also going there. Coincidence???? Nah, it was God's plan...haha! So, I hitched a ride with them. Then, they left and I was alone at the plantation waiting for my friend. SO, I decided to explore on my own and went on a little tour around the plantation and to feed some farm animals. They kept me company for the time being! and of course....it was a day with the LORD!

The following day, I was at the Eumundi Market. It was like a big 'pasar malam' but held during the day with different handycrafts, food stuff, and home made products. Then the whole afternoon was spent at the beach! Good exercise for the day....walking along the beach to the river mouth and over to the Underwater World. It was all within walking distance from her house...so pretty cool eh....hehe!

At the end of the day, we were pretty tired and settled for some movies at home instead. Then, had to leave early the following day as I had to go to Gold Coast church to play for their worship session. They just started a service there and a team of us from HOPE Brisbane went over to help out. So, was at Sunshine Coast in the morning, back to Brissy and down to Gold Coast on the same day!

Wanna join me for a Picnic?

Savouring the "picnic moment" with friends from Japan, Spore, HK & Msia :)

Just the other day my friend asked, "Wanna go for a picnic?" I thought for awhile.....man, when was the last time I've ever heard that phrase??? Well, back home we hardly ever thought of having a picnic...except for having seen people picnicking along the highway with 'nasi lemak', 'karipap', and 'air bandung'....hehe!

But actually, picnic....can be defined simply as a pleasure excursion at which a meal is eaten outdoors, ideally, taking place in a beautiful landscape. Formerly, picnic meant a potluck, an entertainment at which each person contributed some dish to a common table for all to share. The first usage of the word was traced to a 16th century French text, describing a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine. A theory has it that the word picnic is based on the verb piquer which means 'pick' or 'peck' with the rhyming nique perhaps meaning trifle. Interesting eh?

So, inline with the defination and the origin of the word picnic, we each brought a dish.......we had Rach & Kim's Super Sandwiches, Winnie's Peach Crumble, Claire's Salad & Cheryl's Curry Puffs! We picnicked at the beautiful Botanical Gardens with lotsa green.....So, it was a relaxing afternoon just rekindling the 'picnic moment' which we hardly do back home on a bright & sunny afternoon, with cool breeze.....aaaahhhh.....that's what picnic is all about.

God is the Strength of my Heart

This past week had been a busy week for me. Think it was the busiest since I came to Brisbane. Had the job training teaching group music classes. It was full on!!! We had to listen to lecture, prepare lessons, present, act like kids, handle different kids' and parents' case scenarios. Each of us had to present like how we were going to teach the lesson and were evaluated. Man, it was nerve wrecking at first....being the only 'new asian'.....Haha! But after having to do it everyday....I was more relaxed. But through it all, "God is the strength of my heart" (Ps. 73:26). If this is really for me, He will see me through....and it paid off when I got the Level 1 training cert and started work yesterday. WooHoo....!!!! Don't be surprised if you see me like one of the 'Wriggles' one of these days.....;) Muaahaha!

Another answered prayer was that I'll be going to the Royal Children's Hospital for my next practical placement. I'm really looking forward to that......as a lot of us applied to that hospital but I'm one of those blessed few who got it! PTL!

Now, time to continue enjoying my remaining holidays!

Makan.....Makan....Makan....

Past week has been a time of feasting for me! But my friend whom I met at airport said I lost weight wor....hehe! Maybe good so I can eat some more! It all started at a Mexican restaurant with my housemates on my Birthday! The nachos were neatly arranged cheesy and yummy!

Substitute for cake!

Household picture!

Then, I was at a friend's place for an Asian BBQ with pork that tasted like 'char siew', 'assam' fish and yummy curry. The gals didn't have to prepare anything.......yeah....one of those rare ocassions! It was fun! we ate, talked, ate, played cards, ate, watched TV, ate and slept!!!! so....ya that was practically it!

One BIG happy family :)

Few days later, we went for 'yam char'. It is actually 'dim sum' but people here call it 'yam char'. We were too excited and forgot to take picture with the food.....anyway....here it is!

My angelic friend & I

Next, feast was at a Korean restaurant. We shared a 'HOT POT'. It was quite nice, except that it was like 'maggi' noodles with added ingredients. Haha! Yes, I miss curry 'Maggi Mi'....the Malaysian one!

Korean Hot Pot!

So, after eating this, we thought we should have our very on Steamboat Party!!!. We had a 'tom yam' steamboat just a few days ago at my cozy little house here....not bad for 1st timers! Too bad for those who are away back in their hometowns! We had fun!!! We were like professionals!!!

Tom Yam Steamboat!

Team effort, lovely food presentation skills!

And....to top it all of, we had yummy peach crumble, with ice-cream, strawberry and chocolate....oooh....thanks to Winnie!

Happy Holiday :)

I had one of the most fun-filled holiday over the weekend! I think I've turned into an owl!

Last Saturday, I was at Gold Coast with some friends ....something like a day road trip all the way to New South Wales! YES!!! I was at NSW.....haha! We were at Fingal Head.....suppposed to be able to see dolphins but then again.....they decided to keep us in suspense so we will return some other time to see them ;)So we jus admired the really beautiful coast, blue skies, crashing waves and golden sand! That was enough to satisfy us for the day.

Meet my band ;)......

Then, I got home and went to friends place for dinner and unexpectedly/expectedly (hmmm....i wonder) decided to stay on to watch soccer....and so I didn't sleep at all until the following morning.....jus managed to catch 40 winks. Then out to church.

Yesterday, was out at the city for 'dim sum' and shopped the whole day! Ya....it was a make up for the other day when I didn't get any stuff from DFO :( So, ya....trying to console myself!

What's Nice & What's Not!

Its been 4 months, 3 days here in Brisbane......now, here's a list of 'What's Nice & What's Not!':

What's Nice?

1. My room - its as big or maybe bigger than my room back home, with nice view, really large window that's equal to the length of my room, big enough wardrobe to play 'hide and seek'.

2. The people - warm & friendly, saying 'hi' and 'thank you' to bus drivers, really cautious drivers..........and i mean really cautious like just waiting to give way to other people....u know....

3. Home-cooked food - home cooked food is the best meal i can get here! my housemates cook really nice chicken rice, 'siew yoke' and of course my innovative cooking that u can't possibly get elsewhere!

4. The winter - I'm beginning to like the winter here.....its cold but not that cold....maybe just like 'Genting'. And the best part, I can still go to the coast during winter!

5. My course - I'm really enjoying my course! Well.....I should! I afterall it costs a bomb! love my lecturer and classmates. To know more about what I've been doing in this course, check out ywap.blogspot.com.

What's Not!

1. No 'mamak' - what's life without 'mamak'? no place to hang out to chat or drink at night, just stay in your room and do what I'm doing now....good in a way....no supper! keep fit!

2. Shopping malls close at 5pm - sad isn't it? where do all the people go at night? oh well.....the malls back home are much bigger and nicer and whole lot cheaper! but i still go shopping here....wat to do.....nothing to do here... just go shopping lo.....tat's so girl!

3. No REAL chilli sauce - the chilli sauce here are not made of chilli i guess....hehe! they have mostly sweet chilli sauce....but isn't chilly supposed to be spicy??? AND you have to buy them from fast food outlets...unlike back home its free flow! so, bring your own chilli sauce wherever u go!

4. No nice TV program - mostly news, talk shows, sports, sports and more sports.....zzz....zzz.....so, the alternative is to make friends with a lot of Singaporean and Malaysian friends and borrow DVDs they got from home! ;)

5. No flat road to walk on - all roads here are hilly....really hilly. All those new drivers, its a test of ur manual skills! I'm still deciding on a day when I need to really force myself to exercise and walk back from uni! but the bus stop's just outside my house, and its 10 mins ride to uni.......so what's the point?

Why Music Therapy?

This is the question that I've been asked and will be asked over and over again. Well, I grew up in a family where music is so much part of my life.....my family members (mum's side) love music, right from my grandma, grandpa, uncles, aunties, cousins, parents, (sister ?), nephews & nieces.

When I was younger, my relatives would sing during family gatherings and my eldest cousin would rope in all the other cousins to take part in this 'family musical'. I being the youngest then, among all my cousins, would just be the 'copy cat' and immitate the dance steps or whatever my older cousins did. yeah....was very cute then, maybe around 4 years old ....haha! My grandpa would sing his favourite hymn, "Freely, Freely You Have Received" & "Amazing Grace" whenever and wherever he liked. Of course, my other relatives would have their favourites too and would call out the song and sing....like a song request and karaoke session....haha!

Then, there would be the "highlight" of the day when my relatives start calling out my cousins to give their solo recitals. So, I had a cousin who was known for his "snake dance", a cousin who was a "famous wedding singer", a cousin who conducted musicals, cousins who played the violin, cello, an uncle who played the accordion, and another cousin famous for her "Richard Clayderman style" (because her mum loved it!).

And now as I look back......that may be my first ever music therapy encounter without me even realizing it! In fact, among the aims of music therapy are to encourage interaction, encourage social skills, and build self esteem. Music is widely used as a means of communication.

Another early encounter with music therapy I had, was probably the time when my maid hummed "Amazing Grace" as a lullaby to put my baby sister to sleep.....haha...wonder if my sister remembers.....Lullabies do have an impact in the physiological aspects (oxygen saturation level, pulse, breathing patterns) of infants because of their simple melodies, steady & moderate tempo (similar to their mother's heartbeat). Lullabies give infants a sense of security and are used with neonates in music therapy to help manage their physiological aspects without the use of medication.

So, with this musical upbringing and my exposure to church music, I have always wanted to do music! Taking music as a career to teach/perform is one thing, and doing music as therapy is another.....However, after much prayer, support and encouragement from my parents, I have decided that indeed, music therapy is what I would like to be doing. The fact that it is almost unheard of back home, is the very fact that pushes me forward to want to learn more.

Music is a universal language that must be shared by all for the benefit of all people, nations and cultures. Music therapy is not as alien as you think it is. It was used in the Bible:

1 Samuel 16:23
Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

I believe that God each of us gifts and talents to glorify him. And as for me, I hope that the gift of music that He has blessed me with will be used for His glory!

WELCOME EVERYBODY!!!!

View of Brisbane city from my room

Welcome to my blog everyone!!! Yeah, I finally, finally decided to have my own blog for all of you who have missed me in one way or another ;), for my interesting friends and to share my groovy stories from Down Under with you.

I've settled down well here in Brissy, special thanks to my wonderful housemates, church friends, and classmates! Well, it was quite a change actually from the noisy, congested, fast-pace concrete jungle life to a quite, peaceful, slow-pace life. It was an exciting journey for me to leave home, travel on my own to an unknown place, making new friends, and adapting to a new culture.....and I made it! Phew!

I thank God for opening new doors and looking after me! After 4 months here in Brisbane.....I can say "I'm lovin' it!" (.....apart from the shops closing at 5pm :( hehe!)

I hope "My Groovy Life" is able to encourage, inspire and to give you an insight to what I'm doing here!

Have a G'day!
